Torrens, Beverley (McNamara)

I started at MLTC in 1972 straight from high school. With a December birthday, I was barely 17. My name before I was married was Torrens, so I was Beverley Torrens, or better known as Bev Torrens. While at MLTC I served as Vice President of the Student Council (the President at the time was Ken Wyatt). Once I graduated in 1974 I worked in Catholic primary schools for seven years teaching years 5-7 in various combinations.

I left primary school teaching when I had my first child. After a second daughter I went to university and 12 years later I’d had a third child, a son, and had graduated with a PhD in Anthropology. My academic career at both UWA and Curtin saw me strike success, especially in teaching. I have received several awards in teaching excellence and I have served in a number of senior teaching leadership roles.

It will come as no surprise to you that I have always acknowledged the training I received at MLTC, believing that learner centred education is core to grasping knowledge and skills. More importantly, it motivates and empowers students to commit to life long learning. It makes no difference if the student is five, ten, 25, 60 or 90, teachers need to provide the tools for students to make their own ways in the learning world.
