Swan View Primary School Drain to Livings Stream Video, showcases the restoration of a water drain by Swan View Primary School. The School has adopted their local water drain at Woodbridge Creek, and over a number of years the drain has been transformed into a living stream.

Andy Durant is the champion of this great project and has worked tirelessly over the years, removing weeds and litter from the drain to replace with local native plant species. The children at Swan View Primary enjoy the project and are keen to get outside and spend a few hours mulching, planting, weeding, picking up litter and enjoying walking along the creek.

An excellent outcome from the project has been that local residents have stopped using the drain as a dumping point for rubbish and the bird species have increased from three to sixteen different types of birds. Funding for the mulch and plants has been provided through the Swan Alcoa Landcare Program (SALP).

Heary, Auriol (A)

Auriol Heary is a teacher in Perth and conducted her PhD research by providing high school students with an after school Astronomy Club with remote access to the Zadko Telescope and the chance to participate in authentic astronomical research searching for Near Earth Objects (NEO) with their own computer.

Auriol worked with about sixty students from one city high school and one city primary school from Years 5 to 11. Students nominated themselves to be part of this program if they were interested in the subject matter Consequently, they ranged from very high achieving to underachieving, but most were clearly motivated by science. Auriol’s program incorporated training to enable participating students to use the Zadko Telescope remotely, to collect original scientific data from home or the classroom.

The program could thus be integrated into the students’ regular science lessons. Students had a significant probability of discovering new asteroids, NEOs and gamma ray burst afterglows. Further, it was possible for them to analyse and report their findings working with and acting as real scientists. In less than three months of occasional observing in 2009, three students discovered seven new asteroids and followed up on seven gamma ray burst afterglows.

The Astronomy Club, initiated by Auriol Heary in 2010, was located at a government high school in Perth with twenty-four Year 8, 9 and 10 students volunteering to participate. Astronomy lessons were conducted weekly after school on Wednesdays from 4 to 5pm. Term 3 focussed on developing the understanding and skills needed to complete the program effectively, that is, to take and analyse images using the Zadko Telescope. Individual projects commenced in Term 4 with all students being able to use the Zadko program effectively.

Data about the educational aspects of the program were collected in the form of observations, mind maps, reflective journals and quizzes. The findings were based on an initial analysis to evaluate changes in the participating students’ understanding of astronomy and attitudes towards science. Initial results indicated improvement in students’ knowledge of transient objects, specifically asteroids.

The days of student-centred learning were short-lived, however, and he found himself to be part of a big system that chopped and changed regularly. The NeiL KIDD we know now had to get out while he could!

My Brilliant Career – self interview

Kikeros, Angela (C) (Verevis)

I began at Clarkson Community High School in January 1977 as the co-ordinator for Blue Community. The school was not finished, so all the students received an extra week’s holiday, whilst the teachers unpacked boxes and boxes of books, stationary and resources.

School was beginning on the Monday and by Thursday, we still had no lawn in the science quadrangle, until the manpower arrived! Trucks and trucks of rolled grass were put down by about 20 men, who worked all day to do it.

The school was still a building site, with demountable classrooms, staffroom, and toilets. Now we are in 22007 and I am ready for another change in life – retirement. After 30 years in education, in 2008 I am taking a year’s long service break, then I will officially retire.

The Reverend Margaret Tyrer was one of only three women Ministers in the Presbytery of Perth in the mid 1980s. An Article in the Southern Gazette of 7 May 1985 stated that Margaret was “a champion of women in the church and we would like to see more of them. Women are usually well socialised in the community and have caring roles and this can fit them well for the Minister’s role of caring involvement in the community”.

The Reverend Tyrer, who had moved from Brookton to Perth at the age of 14, had a varied career from shorthand typist, then teacher after training at Teachers Training College, Bible College in Tasmania, service with Missionary Societies in Queensland and Indonesia, and finally into the Ministry. She had Bachelor Degrees in Education and Divinity.
